quarterback は quarter「4分の1ほどの位置」＋back「後衛」から成る米語です。quarter はラテン語 quartus「4番目」にさかのぼり、halfback や fullback より前寄りに立つ役割なので、この名で呼ばれるようになりました。関連語は quarter, quartet。
