monkは、修道院や寺院などで宗教的な修行・生活を送る男性の修道者や僧侶を指します。仏教の僧だけでなく、キリスト教などの修道士にも使われます。禁欲的な生活を営み、祈りや精神的な実践に従事する人物を表します。

monkは後期ラテン語monachusを経て、ギリシャ語monakhos「独りで暮らす人」にさかのぼります。核はmonos「一人・単独」で、世俗から離れて一人で修行する姿が「僧侶」の意味になりました。monologueやmonopolyも同じmono-を含みます。
*Monk* comes through Late Latin *monachus* from Greek *monakhos*. Its root is Greek *monos*, meaning "alone" or "single." The original image was a person living apart from ordinary society, and that idea later became the religious sense. The same root appears in *monologue* and *monopoly*.
