覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
full+back から成る競技上のポジション名で、「後方を担う選手」という構成を押さえます。ただし役割は競技別で、サッカーでは主に左右の守備選手、ラグビーでは後方の守備・攻撃参加、アメフトでは走路を作ったり短距離を走ったりする選手です。play as a fullback、the fullback defended が典型です。
Break fullback into full and back, and picture a player positioned toward the back of the formation. The name gives you the general location, but the role depends on the sport. In association football, fullbacks usually defend on the left or right and may move forward to support attacks. In rugby, the fullback often covers space behind the main defensive line. In American football, a fullback commonly blocks and may carry the ball. Learn it through phrases such as play as a fullback and the fullback defended.

fullback の語源・成り立ち Etymology
1880年代の米スポーツ語で、full は古英語系で「完全な・最後尾まで」、back も古英語で「後ろ」を表す。ラインのさらに奥に置かれる後衛なのでこの名になり、関連語に quarterback、halfback がある。
Fullback is a compound of full and back that developed as a sporting position name in the nineteenth century. Back identified a player stationed behind the forward line, while full distinguished the deepest back from positions historically called halfback and quarterback. As different football codes developed their own formations and rules, the position’s responsibilities diverged, leaving the same compound with different tactical meanings in association football, rugby, and American football.
