Pharmacology is the scientific study of drugs and how they affect the body. It includes how medicines work, how they are used, and what side effects they may cause. This word is common in medicine, pharmacy, and medical research.

まず pharmacy（薬局・薬学）を土台にすると覚えやすいです。pharmacology は「pharmacy の中でも、薬が体にどう効くかを理屈で学ぶ分野」と捉えると定着します。語尾 -logy は biology, geology と同じで「学問」。つまり「薬＋学問」で薬理学。pharmacy が調剤や薬そのもの寄りなのに対し、pharmacology は作用・副作用・用量・代謝を研究する響きが強いです。clinical pharmacology, study pharmacology の形でも覚えると実際の使い方と結びつきます。

pharmacology はギリシャ語 pharmakon「薬・毒」と logos「学問・論」から成り、近代ラテン語経由で英語化しました。薬の働きを理屈立てて研究する学問という語形そのままの意味で、pharmacy や pharmacopoeia も同じ pharmakon を含みます。
Pharmacology comes from Greek `pharmakon`, meaning a drug, medicine, or poison, and `-logy`, meaning study. It reached English through modern Latin and similar scientific forms. The word kept its structure clearly, meaning the study of how drugs work, and it shares its first part with `pharmacy`.
