中英語 rabet、古フランス語の方言 rabotte に由来し、フランドル語 robbe（ウサギ）との関連が指摘される。古英語では hara（hare）が一般的で、rabbit は元々子ウサギのみを指した。語源の最終的な起源は不明だが、ロマンス語経由で英語に入った。
Rabbit comes from Middle English rabet, borrowed from a dialectal form of Old French such as rabotte. Related forms have been compared with Flemish robbe, but the word’s ultimate origin remains uncertain. In its early English use, rabbit referred particularly to a young rabbit, while older words were used for the adult animal. It later became the standard general name for the species.
