curryは英語らしく見えて、実はタミル語kari「汁・おかず」に由来するとされる。米に添える味つきの汁物の名がそのまま英語に入り、料理全体の呼び名へ広がった。curriedやcurry powderにも、もとの「味を添える汁」の感覚が残る。
Probably from Tamil kari, meaning a sauce, relish, or dish eaten with rice. The word entered English through contact with South India. Its meaning then widened from a specific kind of seasoned sauce or side dish to the broader English idea of curry as a whole style of dish.
