rand は南アの通貨名で、アフリカーンス語 rand「縁・尾根」から来ており、その元はオランダ語 rand です。金鉱地帯 Witwatersrand の名にちなむため、もともとは土地の“縁・尾根”を表し、そこから通貨名 Rand になりました。関連語は Witwatersrand, Krugerrand。
