re-「再び」+ collect「集める」で、ラテン語 colligere「集める」にさかのぼります。collect や select と同じく legere 系の語で、散った記憶を“もう一度集め直す”から「思い出す」になるとわかります。
Recollect comes from re-, meaning "again," and collect. Collect goes back to Latin colligere, "to gather together." Recollect originally suggested gathering scattered thoughts or memories back together once more, and from that it developed the sense of remembering. It is related to collect and, more distantly, select through the same Latin family.
