接頭辞 re-（再び）＋ギリシャ語 kyklos（円、輪）から成る cycle の合成語。bicycle（二輪車）やencyclopedia（百科事典＝知識の輪）と同根。「輪を再び回す」→「再循環させる」という意味で、資源の循環利用を表す。
Recycled is the past-participle form of recycle. Recycle combines re-, “again,” with cycle, whose history leads through Latin cyclus to Greek kyklos, “circle” or “wheel.” The modern verb presents materials as moving through a cycle again instead of being discarded. In spelling, recycle keeps its final e and adds d; its adjectival use describes materials or products that have completed this process.
