dictionary が「単語の意味を引く本」なら、encyclopedia は「物事そのものを調べる本」。人名・歴史・科学・文化などを広く横断して説明が並ぶイメージで覚えると残りやすいです。辞書や textbook より網羅的で、manual のように使い方に限られない点も対比すると定着します。つづりは長いですが、Wikipedia の -pedia を見つけると形でも覚えやすく、online encyclopedia / medical encyclopedia のような語のまとまりで覚えると実戦的です。
Use a contrast: a `dictionary` explains words, but an `encyclopedia` explains things. It covers people, history, science, and many other topics, so think of a book of broad knowledge. The `-pedia` part can also remind you of `Wikipedia`.

encyclopedia は新ラテン語 encyclopaedia からで、もとはギリシャ語 enkuklios paideia「ひと巡りの教育」です。en-「中に」＋ kyklos「輪・円」＋ paideia「教育」が合わさり、「諸学を一巡して学ぶ」感覚から百科事典になりました。cycle や pedagogy と同根です。
"Encyclopedia" came into English from New Latin "encyclopaedia," based on Greek "enkuklios paideia." This phrase meant something like "a rounded" or "complete education," from "en-" meaning "in," "kyklos" meaning "circle," and "paideia" meaning "education."
