elusive はラテン語 eludere「うまくかわす・出し抜く」の過去分詞語幹 elus-＋-ive です。e-/ex-「外へ」＋ ludere「遊ぶ」から、「ひらりとかわして捕まらない」感覚がそのまま意味になっています。関連語は elude, ludicrous。
Elusive comes from Latin eludere, through the past participle stem elus-, with the adjective-forming suffix -ive.
