progressing（進歩している）と対で覚えると残りやすい語です。pro- が前進なら、regressing はその逆で「せっかく良くなったのに後戻りしている」感覚。-ing なので一時的な変化の最中という響きもあります。child is regressing, the economy is regressing のように、発達・景気・状態が逆戻りする場面でよく使います。統計の regression も同じつづりの仲間なので、「後退」と「回帰分析」の二本柱で整理すると混同しにくいです。
