reich はドイツ語で「帝国」を表し、古高ドイツ語 rihhi、さらにゲルマン祖語 *rikja にさかのぼる。根底には「支配する」の感覚があり、王や統治の及ぶ領域がそのまま帝国になった。関連語は rich, realm。
Reich is borrowed from German Reich, meaning “realm, state, or empire.” It descends from Old High German rīhhi and ultimately from a Germanic form reconstructed as *rīkiją, associated with rule and a ruler’s domain. It is historically related to English rich, although their modern meanings differ, and more distantly connected in sense with realm. In English, Reich is retained mainly as a German historical and political designation.
