解説 Definition

carving は古英語 ceorfan「切る・刻む」に由来する carve に、接尾辞 -ing が付いた語です。carve や carver と同じ語根で、もともと「刃で切れ目を入れる」ことが核なので、削って形を現すのが carving だと見えてきます。
