Etymology
English Reiki is borrowed directly from Japanese reiki, written 霊気. The first element, rei, can refer to spirit or the spiritual, while ki refers to energy, breath, or vital force in traditional East Asian thought. The practice known by this name was developed in Japan in the early twentieth century and later spread internationally. In English, Reiki is commonly capitalized as the established name of the practice, although lowercase reiki also occurs.
