errandは古英語ǣrende（使命・伝言）が語源で、元は誰かに届ける「メッセージ」を意味した。runは「走る」から転じて「こなす」の意。使いっ走りのように用事をこなすイメージで、関連語にerrant（遍歴の）がある。
Errand comes from Old English aerende, which first meant a message, mission, or task sent by someone.
