samsara はサンスクリット語 saṃsāra「巡りゆくこと・輪廻」から来ており、sam-「共に・完全に」と語根 √sṛ「流れる、進む」を含みます。samsaric などと関係し、「生が流れるように繰り返される」という感覚が輪廻の意味を納得させます。
