川・海・湖の浅い場所に砂が堆積してできる細長い地形を指す。潮の満ち引きや水流によって形が変わることがあり、水面上に現れる場合も水中に隠れる場合もある。船の航行の妨げになったり、鳥の生息場所になったりする。
