sassafras はスペイン語 sasafrás から入った語で、ラテン語 saxifraga「岩を割る草」に寄せて形が変わったという説が有力です。saxi-「岩」+ frag-「砕く」なので、薬草名らしい響きに引かれて定着したと考えると腑に落ちます。関連語は saxifrage、fragment。
Sassafras came into English through Spanish sasafras. Its form was probably influenced by Latin saxifraga, the name of a medicinal herb, built from saxum "rock" and frangere "break."
