一週間の6番目の日で、日曜日の前日。英語ではローマ神話の農業の神サターンに由来する。
The day of the week after Friday and before Sunday. In many countries it is part of the weekend and is commonly associated with leisure, shopping, sports, or time away from work and school.

古英語 Sæterdæg「土星の日」で、ラテン語 Saturni dies の翻訳借用。Saturn はローマ神話の農耕神サトゥルヌスに由来する。他の曜日が北欧神話の神に置き換えられた中、Saturday だけがローマの神名を保持している点が興味深い。
Saturday comes from Old English Sæterdæg, literally “Saturn’s day.” It reflects Latin Saturni dies, the Roman name for the day dedicated to Saturn, the Roman god associated with agriculture. While several other English weekday names replaced Roman gods with roughly corresponding Germanic deities, Saturday retained the Roman name. The astronomical association is with the planet Saturn, which was itself named after the same god.
