覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
scandal は単なる rumor「うわさ」ではなく、不正や不適切な行動が公になり、信用を損なう社会的な騒動を指します。政治・企業・著名人をめぐる場面を思い浮かべ、political scandal、corruption scandal、be involved in a scandal のまとまりで覚えます。形容詞は scandalous です。
Think of a scandal as wrongdoing that becomes public and makes a person, company, or government lose trust. It is stronger than rumor, because a rumor may be unconfirmed and may never produce public outrage. Picture newspapers exposing corruption and the resulting damage to reputation. Useful combinations include political scandal, corruption scandal, financial scandal, be involved in a scandal, and a scandal breaks. The related adjective scandalous describes behavior that is shockingly improper, while scandalize means to shock people by offending accepted standards.

scandal の語源・成り立ち Etymology
scandal は古フランス語 scandale を経て、後期ラテン語 scandalum、さらにギリシャ語 skandalon「わな・つまずき」にさかのぼります。元は「人をつまずかせるもの」で、そこから「不祥事」の意味に発展。関連語に scandalous, scandalize があります。
Scandal entered English through Old French scandale and Late Latin scandalum, ultimately from Greek skandalon, a trap, snare, or cause of stumbling. In religious and moral use, the image of causing someone to stumble developed into the idea of giving offense or encouraging wrongdoing. The word later came to denote disgraceful conduct that becomes publicly known and the controversy or reputational damage surrounding it.
