Selenium is a Modern Latin element name created in the early nineteenth century from Greek selēnē, “moon,” together with the element-name ending -ium. Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius named it after recognizing a new element in 1817; the name was chosen in relation to tellurium, whose name is associated with Earth. The lunar connection survives in related scientific formations such as selenic and selenide.
