覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「セコイア」とほぼ同じですが、英語では a sequoia、a tall sequoia のように可算名詞として使えます。giant sequoia や coast redwood と関連付け、北米に育つ、非常に高く長寿な針葉樹の姿を思い浮かべると、一般的な tree より具体的な語として定着します。
Although sequoia closely matches the Japanese loanword セコイア, remember how it behaves in an English sentence: a sequoia, the sequoia, and tall sequoias are all natural forms. Picture an enormous, ancient conifer in a North American park, with visitors walking around its broad base and looking far upward. Connect it with giant sequoia and compare it with coast redwood, another exceptionally tall related tree. This scene anchors the word to a specific kind of tree rather than to the general idea of any large tree.

sequoia の語源・成り立ち Etymology
sequoia は学名ラテン語 Sequoia から英語に入った語で、一般にチェロキー文字を作った Sequoyah の名にちなむとされます。固有名由来なので分解はしにくいですが、関連名として Sequoyah があり、『偉業を残した人物の名を木に与えた』語です。
English sequoia comes from New Latin Sequoia, the scientific genus name established in the nineteenth century. The name is widely understood as honoring Sequoyah, the Cherokee scholar who created the Cherokee writing system, although details of the naming history have been debated. Because it entered English as a botanical name based on a personal name, it is not usefully divisible into productive modern English roots or affixes.
