解説 Definition
silhouette は物や人の輪郭だけが暗く見える姿、つまりシルエットという意味です。日本語の「シルエット」とほぼ同じですが、英語では光を背景にした黒い輪郭や影絵のような形を指すことが多いです。

During his lifetime, à la silhouette was used for things considered cheaply or simply made, and the expression became attached to inexpensive profile portraits cut or drawn as dark shapes. English adopted silhouette for such portraits and later extended it to any dark outline seen against a lighter background.
