skein は中英語 skaine を経て、古フランス語 escaigne「毛糸の束」に由来し、その先の語源は不詳です。もともと「糸を輪状にまとめた束」なので、そこから鳥の列や話のもつれのような「入り組んだひとまとまり」へ意味が広がりました。比較される語に仏語 écagne、アイルランド語 sgainne があります。
