tare は商業用語で、英語へはアングロ=フランス語 tare を通じて入り、さらにイタリア語 tara、アラビア語 tarah「差し引く・捨てる」にさかのぼります。容器ぶんを“取り除く”発想がそのまま風袋の意味になったと見ると腑に落ち、動詞 tared や taring も同じ核から理解できます。
English took `tare` from Anglo-French `tare`, which goes back through Italian `tara` to Arabic `tarah`, meaning "what is removed" or "thrown away." The word first referred to the weight taken off when a container was not counted. That idea of subtracting the container's weight stayed at the center of the meaning.
