somersault は古フランス語系の語で、sobre-/sur-「上へ・越えて」+ saut「跳ぶ」がもととされます。saute も同じ saut 系で、核のイメージは「跳ね上がる動き」。ただ跳ぶだけでなく“くるりと越えながら跳ぶ”から、宙返りの意味になりました。
Somersault came into English from Old French forms built on words meaning "over" and "jump." The second part is related to French saut, from the verb meaning "to leap," also seen in English sauté. The original image was not just jumping, but jumping over in a turning movement. That is how it came to mean a flip through the air.
