A genus of filamentous, mostly soil-dwelling bacteria noted for producing a wide range of medically important antibiotics and other bioactive compounds. Its species form branching structures and chains of spores that can resemble fungal growth.

Streptomyces is a scientific New Latin name formed from Greek streptos, “twisted” or “flexible,” and mykēs, “fungus.” The fungal element reflects the branching, filament-like appearance of these bacteria, not a modern classification as true fungi. The name therefore describes visible morphology: filaments and spore chains that may curve or coil. The same strepto- element appears in Streptococcus, while mykēs also underlies terms associated with mycology.
