ジャンルや分類の下位カテゴリー。音楽、映画、文学などで、より大きなジャンルの中の特定のスタイルや形式。
Subgenres are smaller categories within a larger genre. They are often used when talking about music, films, books, or games. Each subgenre has its own style or features, but it still belongs to the main genre.

sub- は subway, subtitle, subconscious などでも見える「下・下位・補助」の感覚を持つ接頭辞。genre は映画・音楽・文学の「ジャンル」。合わせて「大きなジャンルの下にぶら下がる細分類」と捉えると忘れにくいです。レビューや解説で mixes several subgenres のように使われ、genre より具体的、subgroup より作品分類らしい語感があります。末尾の -s は複数形なので、「複数の下位ジャンル」と意識すると定着します。
Break it into `sub-` and `genre`. `Genre` is a main type in music, film, or books, and `sub-` makes it smaller and more specific. So `subgenres` are the smaller branches under a bigger genre. The final `-s` matters too: think of several related mini-categories.

ラテン語の接頭辞sub-（下・副）とフランス語genre（種類）の合成語。genreはラテン語genus（種・類）に遡り、generate（生む）やgeneral（全般の）と同根。「大分類の下位区分」という語の構造がそのまま意味を表している。
"Subgenres" comes from "sub-" meaning "under" or "secondary" and "genre," borrowed from French. French "genre" goes back to Latin "genus," meaning "kind" or "type," the same root seen in words like "general" and "generate." The word grew naturally to mean smaller kinds within a larger class.
