subsections はラテン語 sub-『下の』+ section『切り分けた部分』から成り、section は secare『切る』に由来します。section や dissect と同じく『切って区切る』感覚が核なので、『章の下にある小さな区切り』と捉えると小項目の意味が自然に見えます。
