章・条文・報告書などの大きな区分の中にある、さらに細かい下位区分を指す語。文章や法律の構成を整理して内容を分かりやすく示すために設けられ、番号や見出しが付くことが多い。
A subsection is a smaller part within a larger section of a book, document, report, or set of rules. It is used to organize information clearly, especially in formal or structured writing.

section を知っていれば覚えやすい語。section は本・報告書・法律の『区分・節』で、sub- が付くと『その下にある、さらに細かい区分』になる。chapter より小さく、section の内側を分ける単位と押さえるとよい。実際には 2.1、2.2 のような見出し番号つきで内容を整理する場面が多く、文書の骨組みを思い浮かべると定着しやすい。subway, submarine などの sub- と同じく『下位・下に』の感覚が共通。paragraph は単なる段落だが、subsection は文書構造上の正式な区分名。

subsection は sub-「下に・副次の」+ section「切り分けた部分」から成る語です。section はラテン語 sectio、さらに secare「切る」にさかのぼるため、全体で「大きな区分をさらに下で切り分けた部分」=「小区分」と納得できます。関連語に section, dissect があります。
