解説 Definition
インターネットドメイン名の階層構造における下位レベルの領域。メインドメインの前に付加される部分ドメイン名。
A subdomain is a smaller, separate part of a larger domain. On the internet, it is the part added before a main website address to organize content, such as for a shop or blog. The word is also used more generally for a specialized area within a bigger field.

sub- は submarine, subway, subtitle などで見慣れた「下・補助・一段下」の感覚、domain は「領域・担当範囲」。合わせて「大きな領域の下にある小さな領域」と捉えると定着しやすいです。Web では example.com が domain、blog.example.com の blog.example.com 全体が subdomain。subdirectory は /blog/ のようなURLパス側の階層なので別物。create a subdomain, use a subdomain, on a subdomain の形で一緒に覚えると実戦で迷いません。
Break it into `sub` + `domain`. `Sub-` means a lower or smaller part, and `domain` is an area or field. Think of a big area with a smaller area inside it, and compare it with `subdirectory`, which is a path, not the same thing.
