Deprecation is the state of being marked as no longer recommended, especially in software or technology. A deprecated feature still exists, but developers are advised not to use it because it may be removed in the future. deprecation は deprecate の名詞形で、ラテン語 deprecari「祈って避けてもらう」が源です。de-「離れて」+ precari「祈る」から成り、もとは「どうかやめてくれと願う」ことでした。pray も同系で、非推奨には「それは避けてほしい」という語源の気配が残ります。
