subsidiaries の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 subsidiarius(予備の、補助の)から。sub-(下に)+ sedēre(座る)が語根で、「下に控えて支援する」が原義。関連語: subsidy(補助金)、subside(沈む)。本体の「下に座る」補助的存在→子会社の意味に発展した。
Subsidiaries is the plural of subsidiary, which came through Latin subsidiarius, meaning “reserved, auxiliary, or serving as support.” It is related to subsidium, a reserve force or assistance, formed from sub-, “under,” and a root connected with sedere, “to sit.” The idea of something positioned below or held in support later developed into the modern business sense of a company controlled by a parent company.
