Subspaces are smaller spaces or areas that exist inside a larger space or system. In mathematics, the word has a technical meaning for a smaller set within a larger structure. In general use, it suggests a part that belongs inside a bigger whole.

まず subspace をひとかたまりで覚えると楽です。space は「空間」、sub- は submarine, subway などと同じく「下位の・一部の」感覚なので、「大きな空間の中にある小さな空間」と捉えると定着しやすいです。数学では単なる subset ではなく、その中だけで足し算やスカラー倍をしても外に出ない“ちゃんと空間として振る舞う部分”を指します。subspaces はその複数形で、「そういう部分空間がいくつもある」という場面を思い浮かべると覚えやすいです。
