A sulcus is a groove or narrow furrow on a surface. The word is often used in anatomy, especially for the shallow folds on the surface of the brain.

覚えるときは、脳の表面を「盛り上がりと溝のセット」で見ると定着しやすいです。盛り上がった部分は gyrus、そこに挟まる細い溝が sulcus。単独で暗記するより、この対比で覚えると意味がぶれません。日常語の groove や furrow に近い感覚ですが、sulcus は解剖学で使う専門語。brain sulcus, central sulcus の形でよく現れ、骨や歯の細い溝にも使えます。語尾が -us の名詞なので、複数形 sulci も一緒に押さえると見分けやすいです。
Learn `sulcus` together with `gyrus`, because they are a pair in anatomy. A `gyrus` is the raised part, and a `sulcus` is the groove between raised parts. sulcus はラテン語で「溝・畝」を意味し、もともとは畑に犂で入れる筋を指しました。そのため解剖学でも脳表の細い溝をいう語になり、「線ではなく刻まれた谷」という感覚が残っています。関連語は sulcal, sulcate。
`Sulcus` comes directly from Latin, where it meant a furrow, groove, or trench, especially a line made by a plow in a field. In anatomy, the word was later used for the narrow grooves on the surface of the brain because they look like cut channels.
