脳の表面に見られる盛り上がったひだ状の部分を指す解剖学用語です。複数の脳回のあいだには溝があり、こうした凹凸によって大脳皮質の表面積が増え、多くの神経細胞を収められるようになっています。医学・神経科学で使われます。
A gyrus is one of the raised curved parts on the surface of the brain. It is a technical word used in biology and medicine when describing brain structure.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
gyrus は gyroscope の gyro を手がかりにすると覚えやすいです。gyro- を見たら「回る・曲がる形」を連想し、脳表面のくねっと盛り上がった1本のひだを指す語だと結びつけます。ポイントは「溝」ではなく「盛り上がり」の側だということ。谷は sulcus、山が gyrus です。図で脳の凹凸を見るたびに、gyrus = 盛り上がったひだ、複数は gyri とセットで確認すると定着しやすく、似た専門語とも混同しにくくなります。
Use `gyro` as your hook, like in `gyroscope`, to remember the idea of turning or curved shape. A `gyrus` is the raised, curved fold, so connect it with the “hill” side, not the groove. Pair it with `sulcus` if that helps: `gyrus` is up, `sulcus` is down. Also notice the plural `gyri`, which often appears in biology texts.
