解説 Definition
国家が法律や非常時の制度にもとづいて、人を軍隊に入らせることを指す動詞。本人の希望ではなく、公的な命令によって兵役に就かせるという含みが強い。戦時や徴兵制に関する説明でよく使われる。
To conscript means to force someone by law to join the military or another form of national service. It is mainly used in political, legal, and historical contexts, and it usually suggests that the person has no choice.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず voluntary enlist「志願入隊」と対比して覚えると定着しやすい語です。conscript は本人の意思ではなく、国家が人を軍に回すときに使います。script は manuscript など「書かれたもの」に多いので、「名前を名簿に載せられて軍へ」という像を持つと忘れにくくなります。be conscripted into the army, conscript young men のように出やすく、戦争・徴兵制・非常時の説明で見たらこの語を疑うとよいです。draft と近いですが、conscript のほうが制度的で強制の響きが強めです。

conscript はフランス語 conscrit を経てラテン語 conscriptus に由来し、conscribere は con-「共に」＋ scribere「書く」から成ります。もともと「名簿に書き入れる」で、そこから兵役名簿へ強制登録する「徴兵」の意味が生まれ、関連語に scribe, manuscript があります。
Conscript comes through French from Latin conscriptus, the past participle of conscribere. This Latin verb combines con- "together" and scribere "to write." It first meant writing someone's name on a list, and later especially putting someone on a military list, which led to the sense of forcing people into military service.
