superlatives は、文法では形容詞や副詞の最上級形を指し、ある集団の中で性質が最も強いことを表す。また日常表現では、誰かや何かを最大限に褒めたたえる言葉、つまり最高級の賛辞や絶賛の表現という意味でも使われる。
Superlatives are forms of adjectives or adverbs that show the highest degree, such as "best," "fastest," or "most beautiful." In grammar, they are used when comparing three or more people or things. The word can also mean very strong praise in general use.

super を知っていれば核は「ほかより上」。そこに big-bigger-biggest と同じ「比較のいちばん上」が乗ると、superlative は文法の最上級だと取りやすい。best, largest, most beautiful のように、集団の中で頂点を示す形の総称。さらに speak in superlatives / praise someone in superlatives なら「最高級の賛辞でほめる」。comparative（比較級）は“より〜”、superlative は“いちばん〜”という対比で固定すると忘れにくい。
