super「上位の」とset「集合」を組み合わせた語で、別の集合を丸ごと包む大きな集合をイメージする。A is a superset of Bなら、Bの全要素がAにも含まれるということ。subsetは「中に含まれる側」なので、{1, 2}は{1, 2, 3}のsubset、後者は前者のsupersetとなる。
Contrast it with subset. Think of super- as sitting above and enclosing the smaller set: the superset contains everything in the other set.
