vetiver の語源・成り立ち Etymology
vetiver はフランス語 vetiver を経て、タミル語 vettiveru「掘り出した根」に由来するとされ、vetti「掘る」+ veru「根」と分けられます。香りの中心が葉ではなく根にある草なので、名がそのまま植物の特徴を言い当てています。vetivert も同系です。
Vetiver came into English through French, from a South Indian word, usually traced to Tamil vettiveru. It is often explained as vetti "to dig" plus veru "root." That history fits the plant well, because its valued part is the fragrant root, not the leaf. The variant form vetivert has the same origin.
