sweeper は sweep + -er「する人」で、sweep は古英語 swapan「掃く・勢いよく払う」にさかのぼる語です。「さっと払う」という動作に、人を表す -er が付いて「掃く人」、つまり道路や床を掃除する人を表します。機械を指すこともありますが、この語義ではごみや落ち葉を掃き集める清掃人に結びつけて覚えるとよいです。
Sweeper comes from sweep + the suffix -er, meaning a person or thing that does an action. Sweep goes back to Old English swapan, meaning "to sweep" or "to strike away quickly."
