A symbiont is a living thing that lives in close association with another living thing. The two organisms usually affect each other and may both benefit from the relationship. This word is used in biology and ecology.

symbiont は symbiosis（共生）を知っていると一気に覚えやすい語。sym- は「一緒に」、bio は biology の bio「生命」。つまり「一緒に生きる存在」と分かる。-ont は「その状態にあるもの」を表す語尾だと捉えると、生物そのものを指す点がコツ。関係そのものは symbiosis、そこで生きる当事者が symbiont。host（宿主）と対で出やすく、parasite と違って必ずしも害を与える存在ではない。coral symbionts のように、生態学の文脈でまとまって覚えると定着しやすい。
