symphysis はギリシャ語 syn-「共に」+ physis「生えること・成長」に由来し、原義は「一緒に生え合うこと」です。epiphysis や metaphysis も同じ physis を含み、骨や組織が別々でなく育ちながらつながるので「結合」になると腑に落ちます。
Symphysis comes from Greek syn- "together" and physis "growth" or "nature." Its original sense was "growing together." That idea later became the medical sense of parts joined as they develop; related terms with the same physis root include epiphysis and metaphysis.
