歯石
解説 Definition
歯に付着する固い石灰質の沈着物。歯垢が硬化したもので、歯周病の原因となることがある。
Tartar is a hard yellowish or brown substance that forms on teeth when plaque is not removed. It is a dental term often used by dentists and in oral health advice. In many modern contexts, the more technical term is dental calculus.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
歯科の文脈では、plaque はまだ柔らかい「歯垢」、tartar はそれが硬く固着した「歯石」と対で覚えると整理しやすいです。英語では remove tartar, tartar buildup, tartar control toothpaste などの形で出やすいので、「磨き残しがたまって、最後はブラシでは落ちにくい硬いかたまりになるもの」という場面ごと覚えるのが有効です。target や Tatar、料理名の tartar sauce とは別語なので混同しないよう注意します。
Remember it with `plaque`: plaque is soft, but `tartar` is the hard buildup left on teeth. That contrast is the easiest memory hook. Phrases like `tartar buildup` and `remove tartar` help fix the dental meaning.

tartar の語源・成り立ち Etymology
tartar「歯石」は、中世ラテン語 tartarum が古フランス語 tartre を経て入った語で、もとは酒樽の底にたまる酒石を指しました。歯の表面に固くこびりつく沈着物がその結晶に似るため、この意味になったと見ると覚えやすいです。関連語に tartaric があります。
"Tartar" came into English through Old French from Medieval Latin "tartarum." It first referred to the hard crust left in wine casks, now called cream of tartar. Because the hard deposit on teeth looked similar, the word later came to be used for that substance too. A related word is "tartaric."
