malaise はフランス語 malaise に由来し、mal「悪く」+ aise「楽さ、安楽」から成る。ease や uneasy もこの aise とつながり、核は「楽でいられない状態」。だから「倦怠感」は、痛みが強くなくても何となく調子が悪い感じをうまく表している。
Malaise comes from French malaise, built from mal meaning "badly" and aise meaning "ease" or "comfort." The original sense was being ill at ease or not comfortable. It is related to English ease and uneasy, and it later narrowed to a general feeling of poor health or discomfort.
