解説 Definition

traversing は traverse(横断する、通り抜ける)の現在分詞・動名詞で、場所や領域を一方から他方へ進むことを表します。地形や空間の横断のほか、データ構造を順にたどることにも使われます。

Moving across, through, or over an area from one part or side to another. The form may describe an action in progress or name the activity of crossing terrain, physical space, or a structured set of data.

使い方 Usage

  • be traversing + 場所で「〜を横断している」。横断する場所を直接目的語にできます。 Use be traversing + a place for an action in progress. The place being crossed can be the direct object.
  • Traversing the desert のように、動名詞の句を主語にすると「砂漠を横断すること」を表します。 A gerund phrase such as Traversing the desert can be the subject, naming the activity of crossing the desert.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

traverse の末尾の e を落として -ing を付けると traversing。trans- の「越えて・横切って」という感覚を、谷や砂漠の一方から他方へ進む場面と結び付けましょう。

Drop the final silent e of traverse before adding -ing: traversing. Associate trans- with “across” or “beyond,” and picture moving from one side of a valley or desert to the other.

例文

They are traversing the valley before sunset.

彼らは日没前に谷を横断しています。

Traversing the desert took the team two days.

砂漠を横断するのに、そのチームは2日かかりました。

The robot kept traversing the room in straight lines.

そのロボットは部屋の中を直線的に横断し続けました。

traversing の語源・成り立ち Etymology

traversing は traverse + -ing で、traverse は古フランス語 traverser を経て、ラテン語 transversus「横向きの・斜めの」に由来します。『まっすぐでなく横切る』イメージが核なので、『横断する』の意味が自然に理解できます。関連語は transverse、traverse です。

Traversing is formed from traverse plus -ing. Traverse entered English through Old French traverser, “to cross,” and ultimately relates to Latin transversus, “turned or lying across.” That Latin form combines trans-, “across,” with a form related to vertere, “to turn.” The historical idea of a crosswise direction developed naturally into the modern verb meaning to travel across or through an area.
