解説 Definition
外部からの助けや支えを受けずに、自分の力だけで行うさまを表す語。人が歩く、作業を終える、試合に勝つなど、誰かの援助や器具の補助なしで達成したことを述べるときに使う。医療やスポーツの文脈でもよく用いられる。
Unassisted means without help, support, or outside aid. It is used when a person does something alone, using only their own ability or effort. In formal contexts, it can also describe actions done without machines or special equipment.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
assist「助ける」や assistance「援助」が分かれば、un- が付いて「助けなし」とすぐ取れる。by oneself より少し客観的で、本人の意思より「外部の助け・補助具がなかった」点を強調する語。walk unassisted なら「支えなしで歩く」、complete the task unassisted なら「誰の手も借りず終える」。似た語の alone は単に一人、independent は自立的という性質、unassisted はその場で援助がない状態だと区別すると覚えやすい。
Start with `assist` or `assistance`. The prefix `un-` clearly removes that help, so the word means doing something without outside support. It is useful to compare it with `alone`: `alone` means no company, but `unassisted` stresses no help.

unassisted は un-「ない」+ assisted「助けられた」で、assist はラテン語 assistere「そばに立つ」に由来し、ad- + sistere から成る。insist や resist も同じ sistere を含み、「誰もそばに立たない」から「補助なし」が腑に落ちる。
