Memory Tip
an unconvincing excuse / argument / explanation
Start from `convince`, then `convincing` means something has the power to make you believe it. Add `un-`, and `unconvincing` means it does not make you believe it. It often appears with words like `excuse`, `argument`, and `explanation`.
例文
His excuse was unconvincing and nobody believed him.
The evidence presented at trial was unconvincing to the jury.

Etymology
Unconvincing combines un- meaning "not" with convincing. Convince comes from Latin convincere, meaning "to overcome completely," from con- and vincere "to conquer." The sense shifted from defeating an argument or person to winning someone over in thought, so unconvincing means lacking that power; victory and invincible share the same root.
