undergoing は undergo の現在分詞で、under は古英語 under、go は古英語 gān「行く」に由来します。文字どおりは「下をくぐって進む」で、go や outgoing と同じ語根をもち、そこから比喩的に「処置や苦難を身に受ける」意味へ広がりました。
Undergoing is the present participle of undergo, built from Old English under and go from Old English gan, "to go." The literal image was to go under or pass beneath something.
